Going Natural (Hair): Preparing Others

December 16th, 2009

I didn’t tell anyone I was going natural I just told them I don’t want to use relaxers anymore when my hair was at the TWA stage.

A lot of you don’t feel the need to tell others why you are going natural and that is completely cool. However, there are some people who have extremly tight bonds w//family/friends that if you want to change your hair color you gotta alert everyone. Therefore, in those cases I don’t see the reason why you should not let them know what you are doing.

Also, if someone has long hair and shaves their hair the next, wouldn’t you be a bit curious why they are doing it? Especially if it is your young child, you may be curious to know if it is just about going natural or something serious at school or something. I remember the Britney Spears incident about her shaving her head, and many doctors spoke that it may be psychological reasons. Therefore, to be on the safe side and not to assume anything, I don’t see the harm in letting those you truly care about know.

    I’m natural because …
I’m natural because I don’t like straight hair. I always wore a braid out when it was relaxed and thought “Sod it, might as well go natural..” and here we are!

    I went natural …
I went natural because I’m attracted to big hair! LOL seriously! when I realized “wow my hair can that?!” I said why not do it! who cares what people think!!!

And the best part is not combing my hair! I dont have to comb or brush my everyday! Wow when is the last time I’ve combed my hair? Idk

My reason isnt as deep as other naturals! lol

    people only think …
people only think you should be natural if you have a specific type of hair. it’s pathetic. that’s really the reason why a lot of black girls are baldhead and are seen as unattractive, lol. cause they put perms in their hair it up. there is no such thing as good hair bad hair because there is no such thing as good hair and bad hair. Just different hair types. How you care for it determines the goodness, not texture.

    and use the sleek …
and use the sleek look product that help me alot :) Last. I didn’t do the big chop. My hair was so short, and I wanted long hair. So if few months I will get a trim, and now all my perm is cut off. So I am all natural and curly!

  9. Poohbear68318 says:

    Hey, I have been …
Hey, I have been natural for 3 years now! and yes it is very hard :) But the end results is amazing! Some products that I used to help me is ” Matrix Sleek Look Iron Smoother” Now you don’t need to use this when you iron your hair. You can spray some of this in the roots and blow dry, ( it looks just like a perm) Trust me. its coast about 15 bucks. This last me the whole year. Another tip. Try not to use to much heat. I had a blow dry twice a month.

    That’s what Im …
That’s what Im trying to do.
I was pretty much “bald” all my life, and now I’m going for a natural fro (and so far,I think it looks pretty nice).

  11. TheSecrecyOfSolitude says:

    No,it’s probably …
No,it’s probably because your hair is unique. and when something is unique people want to examine and touch it.

My family like to do the same thing. I really dont mind.

    I almost want to …
I almost want to cry when I hear ppl say “good hair and bad hair” it’s so f’ing sad. I have a new motto about natural hair “God must be MIGHTY CLUMSY to make every black person on earth with naturally curly hair” Then….silence. lol. fools.

  13. jazdj04 says:

    I’ve never had …
I’ve never had anyone say to me “you have bad hair” but I’ve had ppl speak about hair being bad in my presence, are they trying to say something?? I dunno. But I told very few ppl about my hair choice.Showed up one day without my just past shoulder length straight hair with a 3in high afro.lol.I got stares. I have also gotten compliments but I dont understand when ppl say “everyone dont look right with natural hair” ….um, how can someone not look right with hair that grows out of their scalp?

    I have some people …
I have some people in my family who don’t agree with it at all. I took the 6 mos. transition period to prepare myself mentally for all the negative feedback and I was ready for it when I did the BC. I answered those who I felt deserved an answer and ignored those who were rude about it. It’s YOUR decision and YOUR happiness. No one should influence a decision that’ll ultimately make u happy. Going natural is powerful and beautiful. The most liberating feeling I’ve ever felt.

    I really love this …
I really love this video…I am trans. right now and nobody has this video. nobody told me that I would have to answer so many questions about why…why… why. I wish I was prepared for the conversations. You shouldn’t have to answer a question… but you really have to give family something because done’t understand. the transition… stay focused

@9dayrow I agree. And its kind of sick that we are explaining to BLACK people to about being natural wow. If anyone asks me i just tell them to go away. HAH

@kikipeach74 wow can’t believe ur mum is saying that, don’t take this wrong but she shld no better. wow. keep strong and tell ur bf to away lol

  24. WomenzRock says:

    Agreed. I don’t …
Agreed. I don’t really feel the need to alert folks of me “coming out” of the creamy crack closet (lol). People change up a weave, cut their hair ect all of the time.

The simple fact that so many women feel like they HAVE to “explain” why they don’t want to destroy their hair with chemicals is extraordinarily sad and reveals issues in our community on it’s own. When it get’s to that level, it’s not even about hair anymore…it’s the mentality.

    I started dating my …
I started dating my boyfriend when I still had a relaxer and now that I’m completely natural he doesn’t like it at all. He only likes my hair to be straight and slick. My mother doesn’t like it natural either, she always asks if I cut it and I have to go thru the whole shrinkage explanation every time. When I have something important to do, she always tells me to make sure I get my hair my pressed first. :(
